Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff, 

In the last few days, I’ve heard from our students, faculty, and staff who are facing incredibly harsh circumstances because of this historic winter storm. My heart goes out to our entire university community, and our state, as we face this together. I have several updates on actions the university is taking and reminders to share since yesterday’s update. 

ON-CAMPUS MEALS FOR ALL STUDENTS: 

For our students living off-campus in San Marcos and in Bobcat Village Apartments, we know many of you have been without power and water. To assist in this difficult situation, effectively immediately we are opening the two operational dining halls on campus to ALL Texas State students through Monday, February 22.  Any student who presents a valid student ID will receive a hot to-go meal regardless of whether you have a meal plan.  Because the dining halls are also experiencing power outages, we are only able to open Harris Dining Hall (700 Moore Street) and Commons Dining Hall (109 Bobcat Trail) from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.  

BOBCAT VILLAGE APARTMENTS: 

As of this morning, power and water have been restored to the Bobcat Village Apartments. Residents still experiencing issues should contact their hall staff to report the problem.  A boil water advisory issued last night by the City of San Marcos is still in effect and impacts the Bobcat Village Apartments. We delivered bottled water for residents and will continue to supply water until the boil water advisory is lifted. No other on-campus student housing is affected by the boil water advisory. Since last night, the Bobcat Shuttle bus parked for warming at Bobcat Village Apartments has been providing snacks to Bobcat Village residents dealing with power and water outages. The shuttle at that location will continue to provide snacks to residents.   

REMINDERS ABOUT SERVICES AVAILABLE: 

  • Warming shuttles: We continue to provide bus warming shuttles at various locations on the San Marcos Campus: the Lantana Bus Stop, Bobcat Village Apartments, and near Blanco Hall. We aren’t able to use large buildings on campus as warming centers because of the continuing rolling blackouts. 
  • Residence Halls: On-site staff in Texas State residence halls have been checking on students and are available to respond to student needs and concerns. We encourage students to contact the front desk or the on-site staff member in your hall if you need assistance.  
  • Safety Webpage and Emergency Communication: We will post the latest information available about university operations on the Safety Webpage. As we continue to experience instability in power, water, and phone services, the Bobcat Community can communicate with emergency personnel at the University Police Department (UPD) through Bobcat Guardian. Students received an email from the office of the Vice President for Finance and Support Services with more information about this resource on Wednesday evening, February 17. 

As we previously announced, classes are cancelled through 8 a.m. Saturday, February 20.  Tomorrow, we will start to assess possible damage inside university facilities and academic buildings caused by power outages and extreme temperatures. We plan to share more information about resuming classes next week by 5 p.m. Friday, February 19. 

I take heart knowing that as we struggle through this storm, there are countless stories already emerging of neighbors helping neighbors – sharing food, resources, housing, and lending a helping hand. I am so grateful we live and work in a supportive, caring university community. I want to encourage our students to check-in with their families and loved ones. Please stay safe.
